6% Increase in Women Incarcerated Without Sentencing

In the last four years, the number of women in custody without sentencing in the detention centers of Mexico City has increased by 6%. In 2020, there were 556 women in this situation, while in 2023 the figure grew to 591, which corresponds to the mentioned increase. However, in 2024 there has been a more significant rise, with 661 women processed in the first 7 and a half months of the year, a growth of 19% in 228 days.

On the other hand, the vice president of the Human Rights Commission of the Congress of Mexico City, Rebeca Peralta, pointed out that the number of men in custody without sentencing has decreased. In 2020, there were 7,182 men in this situation, while in 2023 the figure decreased to 5,850, a reduction of 19%. This downward trend is not observed in the case of women, which worries the authorities.

Rebeca Peralta expressed her concern about the exponential growth of women in custody without sentencing, indicating that if the trend continues, the increase could exceed 80% by the end of the year. A call has been made to the President of the Court to review this situation and ensure that justice is administered fairly to both men and women.

The deputy from the Green Party highlights that women in custody face a double punishment: for the crime committed and for being abandoned by their families. Furthermore, they face a third punishment by not receiving the justice they deserve, regardless of the nature of their sentencing.
